I’m Gonna Marry You Tobey Maguire

By Samantha Hurley

Oh baby baby, the reason I breath is you
— Britney Spears

Not content with simply running his fan club, 14 year old Shelby Hinkley kidnaps 2004’s hottest celeb: Tobey Maguire, but the Tobey she’s seen in Cosmo is different to the one she now has tied up in her basement.

Written for Zac Efron fans who used to kiss posters of him... and for Zac Efron, who no doubt had countless people tell him that they used to kiss posters of him.

ETU is thrilled to open auditions for its new Y2K farce production

About “I’m Gonna Marry You Tobey Maguire”

“No matter what I do for the rest of my life, the first line of my obituary is always gonna be “Tobey Maguire, Spiderman””

Some fans collect posters,

Some collect autographs,

Some take it too far.

Samantha Hurley’s laugh-out-loud dark comedy, steeped in Y2K nostalgia, is a full-throttle explosion of our para-social relationships and the obsessions that detonate them. Since 2023 Tobey Maguire has become a cult hit playing Off-Broadway and Off-Westend; with reviews praising Author Samantha Hurley’s ability to write raucous amounts of humour while still providing an honest look at obsession and the people behind celebrity culture, and also to actor Tessa Albertson’s ability to melt into the role of a 14 year old.

English Theatre Utrecht is about offering people a chance to connect by doing something fun, and that is what this play is: Fun. Since the day I (the Director) got shown a clip of this bizarre show, I knew it represented what I (and no doubt countless others) think about when we keep coming back to the theatre to perform or watch. The refusal to not take itself too seriously telling a comedic story while not being afraid to take a moment and deconstruct the sort of people that would make such a farce possible, all while sprinkling in a love letter to early 2000s culture and the people who kept it alive. We hope to leave audiences and cast with something that sticks with them. The author put it best when she said:

“If Shakespeare or Arthur Miller read this play, their brains would probably ooze out of their ears and honestly, I love that for me, for us…”

Character Breakdowns

The ages and genders listed are representative of the characters; our actors can be anyone. As an international group we welcome all accents and levels of experience. We only ask for a decent command of the English language and reliability in terms of attendance and dedication.

We are particularly keen on anyone with Improv experience as the script has lots of opportunities to vamp as well as some audience interaction.

Select a character to view audition material

How to audition?

  1. Decide which characters you would like to audition for and record the required material indicated in the breakdowns (a self-tape*).

    • Upload the footage to a platform of your choice making sure that anyone with a link can watch and download it.

    • One video file per character. The title should be “[Your name] [Character] audition“

    • Your performance of the material should be no longer than 2 minutes. Also include a “Slate” at the start of each video you submit.*

  2. Submit your details through the sign-up form below. Remember to include the links to your self-tape.

    • Please submit this no later than midnight on Wednesday the 2nd of September. You will receive confirmation of submission afterwards.

  3. Around the 6th of September, you will receive a message as to whether you have passed on to the in-person round on the 22nd of September.

    • Successful applicants will receive the address of the location, some additional information and materials to prepare.

    • The audition will consist of Improv, performing some excerpts from the script, and chemistry readings.

    • You are not required to memorise any supplied texts, only basic recollection is enough.

  4. You will hear from us by the 28th of September if you have been cast or not.

    • You will likely hear the result via phone, please expect a call from the director at this time.

Crew responsibilities

As an amateur theatre group we rely on volunteers. We have found that actors’ contributions in crew are pivotal for both successful productions and our tight-knit community. That is why each cast member will be asked to take on some responsibilities as crew as well. This could mean anything from gathering and making props/costumes, building set, to keeping up social media and distributing flyers for ticket sales.

Rehearsals & Performances

Rehearsals will take place on Saturday afternoons with two Wednesday evening rehearsals per month from October the 7th to December the 12th and then every Wednesday evening from the 6th of January until the 3rd of February. We will also ask about your availability on Saturdays in January and February in case we need extra time, however, any additional rehearsals will be communicated well in advance.

The rehearsal on Saturday the 12th of December will be a longer rehearsal where we will not only run through the show and rehearse scenes but also work on more tangential things to the play. It will also be when we host a social get together before production breaks for the holidays.

We’ll be performing Tobey Maguire on the 11th and 12th, and 13th of February 2027 in Utrecht, and on the 20th of February** in Amsterdam.

Some important notes

  • This is an amateur production, and actors will be asked to pay a participation fee of €150***. A reduced €75 participation fee is available if your financial situation would make participation difficult.

  • If you get cast and agree to participate, we will expect you to attend on all of the dates you indicated in the sign-up form, excluding sickness and emergencies. Any unplanned absences need to be closely communicated in order to protect the quality of the rehearsals.

You can pay with your U pas allowance

* Video(s) do not have to be professional, you can record them with your phone. Make sure you stand far away enough that we can see more than just your head and upper chest, but close enough that we can see what your facial expression is. Your audio should be clear with minimal echo and background noise and you shouldn’t be in the dark. Please film in landscape mode.
There is no set contents of what to include in a slate. But we recommend including: Your name, where you are located, what character this tape is for, and which bits of the audition material you are performing (if multiple choice is given).

** More performance dates may be added if we receive substantial interest.

** We aim to be inclusive, so if you fear you cannot afford the participation fee, please let us know directly. Asking for the reduced participation fee will not affect your chances of being cast.

Good luck! We look forward to meeting you.

“Where have you been? I’ve been screaming your name!” “Shut up, screaming for me? According to Cosmo, I should be screaming your name”

  • Ramona Harrison director portrait

    Ramona Harrison

    Director

In Primary school her theatre teacher called her a “serial improviser” she took this backhanded compliment and turned it into a career in improv.

You may have seen her onstage in “Heathers” or “Spring Awakening” but she decided to turn her attention to directing for the first time when a clip of Tobey Maguire popped up on her FYP and she knew that she had to bring this gem to The Netherlands.

Ramona has been involved in ETU since 2023 as an actor as well as a marketeer and videographer: She is excited to continue the streak of amazing plays that ETU produces.

  • Al Leuca Producer portrait

    Al Leuca

    Producer

Al has had a passion for theater since she was a kid, although always as an observer. Their interest finally materialized into something real when she discovered the Improv scene in Amsterdam and fell in love with the people just as much as the theater.

After spending 10 years working in corporate she has decided to move on and spend more time in the community. Combining a passion for theater, logistics, and coordination these days Al is dedicating her time to production.

She couldn’t resist getting involved in Tobey Maguire, because with great production comes great responsibility.
